QUTENZA® Therapy for Postherpetic Neuralgia
Sometime years after a herpetic infection, debilitating symptoms like a burning sensation or shooting pains can spontaneously occur, anywhere on the body, due to nerve damage caused by the herpes virus. And these symptoms can last for a month. Often the symptoms of postherpetic neuralgia reoccur.
QUTENZA® (capsaicin) 8% topical system is treatment for adults with nerve related pain caused by either postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). QUTENZA® is FDA-approved and is different from other pills or treatments used to resolve nerve-related discomfort because of its topical application and unique method of targeting the root cause of pain.
The QUTENZA® patch is applied to the affected area for less than one hour. QUTENZA® must be applied in the doctor’s office for safe reasons and for disposal reasons. Also, the patch may need to be reshaped to cover the affected area and the doctor and assistant can ease the application and removal of the patch during the same office visit.
Each 30-minute to 45-minute QUTENZA® application can deliver up to 3 months of pain relief from either postherpetic neuralgia and it can be used up to 4 times each year. QUTENZA® can be used alone or in combination with other treatments and medications. The most common side effects of QUTENZA® are redness, pain, or itching where QUTENZA® was applied. You should tell your CNSO doctor if any side effects bother you or do not go away.
