QUTENZA® Therapy for Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetics often suffer from debilitating symptoms like a burning sensation in their feet, shooting pains in their feet or foot numbness, caused by diabetic nerve damage. The progression of diabetes and diabetic neuropathy causes lifelong suffering.

QUTENZA® (capsaicin) 8% topical system is treatment for adults with nerve related pain caused by diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) of the feet. QUTENZA® is FDA-approved and is different from other pills or treatments used to resolve nerve-related discomfort because of its topical application and unique method of targeting the root cause of pain.

The QUTENZA® patch is applied to the affected area for less than one hour. QUTENZA® must be applied in the doctor’s office for safe reasons and for disposal reasons. Also, the patch may need to be reshaped to cover the affected area and the doctor and assistant can ease the application and removal of the patch during the same office visit.

Each 30-minute to 45-minute QUTENZA® application can deliver up to 3 months of pain relief from diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and it can be used up to 4 times each year. QUTENZA® can be used alone or in combination with other treatments and medications. The most common side effects of QUTENZA® are redness, pain, or itching where QUTENZA® was applied. You should tell your CNSO doctor if any side effects bother you or do not go away.
