The human spinal column is commonly referred to as the backbone. Between each vertebral bone are cartilaginous discs, which allow optimal mobility and flexibility. The discs can, however, succumb to injury or degenerative disease as evidenced by rupture or leakage of its contents. The misshapen disc cartilage then protrudes into the surrounding nerves and spinal cord. The terms “slipped discs,” “bulging discs” or “herniated discs” are all used to describe this occurrence. It can happen gradually over a long period of time due to normal wear and tear commonly called arthritis but in the spine is referred to as spondylosis. Traumatic injuries such as a fall or strain, sports injuries, automobile accident, or overuse can also cause a disc herniation
Depending on which level of the spine a “slipped disc” occurs, pain in the neck and arms or back and legs is felt. The patient will also have numbness, and weakness, which can progress to a loss of function. The most common symptoms of a slipped disc may vary depending on the location in the spine as well as the severity. A slipped disc in the lower black (lumbar) may bring about sciatica, which generates excruciating pain that hinders a person from performing normal day-to-day activities or, in the most severe cases, can lead to paralysis and bowel incontinence called cauda equina syndrome.
